The world keeps getting closer and closer to the technological world you dreamed about when you were a child. It seems that we’re still pretty far from having flying cars, but there are a lot of modern conveniences when it comes to smart home tech. Whether you’re looking to try things out with your first piece of smart home tech or you want to get all of the latest and greatest, we think you’ll like some of our suggestions for 2020.

Smart Home Tech for 2020 Thermostat Image
Smart Thermostats

This is one of the most basic pieces of smart home tech, and it’s the one that a lot of people start with. Google Nest used to be the go-to choice, and it’s still a great option. It allows you to program temperatures for different times of the day and control your thermostat remotely so you can make changes if you deviate from your usual routine. The Honeywell Lyric is another option. It senses where you are in relation to your home. If you travel away from the home, it automatically turns down the heat. As you get closer, it turns things on so that the home is warm when you get home. Other models might do things like have motion sensors to know when someone is home or not, or integrate with your voice assistants, like Amazon Echo or Google Home.

With smart lighting, you’ll be able to control your lights remotely. At first, that might just seem lazy, but it’s actually pretty smart. It could allow you to turn your lights on in the evenings when you’re away on vacation. This can trick would-be thieves into thinking that you’re home.

Some smart lighting kits also allow you to program the lighting to set different moods. You can switch between the bright lighting needed for homework and cleaning to the softer lighting you want just before you go to bed.

Perhaps the best thing about smart lighting options, though, is the affordability. It doesn’t cost much to add a smart light or two to your home. If you like it, you can add more.

Smart Home Tech for 2020 Fridge Image
Smart Refrigerators

Smart refrigerators are certainly not as common as the smart thermostat and lighting options, but we think they’re going to become more popular as the tech gets better and the prices start to drop. While features vary from brand to brand, you can expect a smart refrigerator to have a digital touch screen on the outside. Samsung’s version allows you to create a digital corkboard, leaving messages for family members and syncing calendars. It will also connect to your favourite streaming companies so that you can listen to music while you cook.

All smart refrigerators will send you a notice if the door has been left open, but probably the best feature of a smart refrigerator is the interior cameras that let you see what’s inside without opening the door – from the digital screen or from your smartphone. This is a big convenience when you’re at the store and can’t remember if you’re out of eggs.

Smart Beds

Sleep Number beds have been around for a while, offering the ability to customize different sides of the bed so that partners with different tastes could share a bed and still sleep well. Today’s smart beds are taking things even further. The Smart Bed by Eight Sleep, for instance, will adjust temperatures to keep you warm in the winter and cool in the summer. It also has a feature that tracks your REM sleep and will sync with your alarm to wake you at the best possible moment so you feel refreshed. The ReST Bed automatically adjusts the pressure in five different zones, changing as you shift position during the night. Sleep better with one of these smart beds.

Smart Shower Controls

Gone are the days when a shower meant turning on the water manually and changing the temperature by adjusting the faucet to put out more hot or cold water. These days, smart shower systems allow you to easily control the shower. You can do things like set the water temperature, adjust water pressure, and set a timer so that you – or the kids – don’t stay in the shower too long. This could easily help you save on water. Some people also like to add smart lighting options in the bathroom for a “colour bath” at the same time.

You don’t necessarily need to have smart tech in your home, but it can definitely make things a bit more fun. Smart tech can also save you money. Think about what tools make sense for you, then go out and get them!
