While you’ll undoubtedly want to spend a lot of time in your new home, we’ve put together a list of some of the things you might want to do when you’re feeling like going out and about. Whether you’re looking to commune with nature or want to learn something new, we think you’ll like our suggestions.

Learn About Local History at the Royal Alberta Museum

The recently moved and re-opened Royal Alberta Museum is spectacular, and if you weren’t able to make it in those busy first few days of the re-opening, you’ll want to set aside some time to visit. It’s the largest museum in western Canada and features exhibits about Alberta’s natural and cultural history. Kids will love the 7,000-square foot children’s gallery with hands-on activities to foster a deeper understanding. Adults will love it all. There are also travelling exhibits, so you’ll have a reason to go back again and again.

See Airplanes at the Alberta Aviation Museum

The Alberta Aviation Museum may not appeal to everyone, but you can bet that kids will be excited to get an up-close look at some planes. There are more than 30 aircraft to see, including biplanes and helicopters. Guided tours are available if you want to arrange a field trip for your class.

Catch a Game or a Show at Rogers Place

Edmonton natives already know this, but if you’re new to the area, Rogers Place is a big arena that hosts the Edmonton Oilers and Oil Kings. It’s also an entertainment venue, where you can see major bands or singers, along with other shows like Nitro Circus, the Harlem Globetrotters, and Cirque du Soleil. There’s always something fun going on there, so sign up for emails or follow their Twitter account to learn about the latest. You won’t miss out on tickets.

Take in the Views at Mill Creek Ravine

Land developers in Edmonton have gone a long way toward building communities that preserve some of the natural environment. Most neighbourhoods will have their own parks, playgrounds, stormwater ponds, and walking trails. However, sometimes you want something a bit bigger.

Mill Creek Ravine is a popular park for dog owners because of the off-leash area. They also have paved trails for runners and mountain bikers, and the park connects to the Muttart Conservatory in the north part.

Learn Something New at the TELUS World of Science

When it comes to science museums, it’s hard to beat the TELUS World of Science. Kids will absolutely have a blast, but parents will learn a lot as well when they read the descriptions behind the exhibits. There’s an entire zone designed to appeal to preschool and young elementary-age kids, and older kids will appreciate the space gallery, environment gallery, health gallery, and robotics gallery. Travelling exhibits make it fun to come back again and again. There’s almost always something new to see.

Test Your Luck at the Casinos

If you’d like something a bit more exciting for date night, you might want to try a night at one of Edmonton’s casinos. Century Casino has table games and slot machines, but they also have a fabulous buffet, a comedy club, and other entertaining events. With an on-site hotel, you could make it an incredibly romantic night. The Yellowhead Casino might not have a hotel, but they do have games, dining, and live shows. Of course, it’s important to play responsibly if you’re going to gamble. Set a limit so that you don’t go home too disappointed.

Shop for Unique Gifts on 124 Street

If you’re ready to shop until you drop, you’ll want to head to 124 Street. It’s arguably one of the best shopping districts in Edmonton, and the boutique shops allow you to purchase something that’s a bit out-of-the-ordinary. While you’re there, you can stop for a bite to eat at one of the restaurants. Best of all, these shops are all small, locally-owned businesses. When you shop here, you’re supporting the local economy.
